Ear Seeds (Auriculotherapy)
Ancient wisdom. Modern evidence.
Ear seeds (auriculotherapy) is a non-invasive form of acupuncture based on the principle that the external ear contains a complete microsystem map of the entire body — with specific points corresponding to every organ, structure, and function. Vaccaria seeds (traditionally) or small metal pellets are placed on these points with adhesive tape. The patient then presses the seeds throughout the day, providing continuous stimulation between treatments. Auriculotherapy is recognized by the World Health Organization and has a significant body of clinical research supporting its use.

How it works
Specific ear points are selected based on your health concern — for example, the Shen Men point for stress and anxiety, the hunger and stomach points for appetite regulation, or the lumbar spine points for back pain. Small seeds or pellets are placed precisely on these points with medical tape. You press each seed for 30–60 seconds, 3–5 times per day, to stimulate the corresponding body system. Seeds typically remain in place for 3–5 days before replacement.
Who is it for?
Stress and anxiety management; sleep improvement; appetite and craving regulation (weight loss support); smoking cessation; pain management between acupuncture sessions; patients who want non-needle stimulation; those wanting a portable, between-visit therapy; addiction support.
Who is it not for?
Active infection or eczema on the ear; allergy to metal (use vaccaria seeds instead of metal pellets); pregnancy — certain ear points are contraindicated (discuss with provider).
Session Time
15–20 min (placement, often added to acupuncture visit)
Down Time
None — seeds worn for 3–5 days
Results?
Often within the first few days of use
Peak Results
With consistent use alongside acupuncture treatment
How long does it last?
Effective while seeds are in place; cumulative with regular sessions
How many sessions?
Replaced every 3–5 days; ongoing as part of acupuncture protocol
Do ear seeds really work?
Yes — auriculotherapy has clinical research supporting its use for pain, anxiety, sleep, smoking cessation, and appetite regulation. Multiple randomized controlled trials show statistically significant effects compared to sham placement. The ear's dense innervation (four cranial nerves pass through the external ear) provides a rich neural pathway for systemic effect.
Can I use ear seeds if I'm nervous about needles?
Yes — ear seeds are completely needle-free. They're an excellent entry point for patients new to acupuncture or who prefer non-needle options. They can be used as a standalone therapy or alongside acupuncture for continuous stimulation between sessions.
How do I care for my ear seeds?
Keep them dry when possible — pat dry after showering rather than rubbing. Remove them if the area becomes irritated, itchy, or infected. Press them as instructed — 30–60 seconds per point, 3–5 times per day. Remove and discard after 3–5 days.
